Summary

In the ChatGPT chat view of the Windows desktop application, an assistant reply does not display its answer body. The user confirms that the affected surface is ChatGPT desktop, rather than a Codex coding task, and requested this report in the Codex issue tracker. Please route this report if another tracker owns this surface.

Observed behavior

A user-provided screenshot shows:

  • An earlier assistant answer renders normally, including prose, a PowerShell code block, and its action toolbar.
  • The subsequent user message is visible.
  • The latest assistant turn shows a thinking-duration label of 1m 55s, several reasoning/activity summary lines, and a status indicating 4 websites searched.
  • There is no visible final answer body beneath that activity. The composer remains visible and shows a send-arrow control.
  • No actionable error message is visible in the screenshot.

The user reports this as the Windows desktop app failing to display the conversation/reply. The screenshot alone does not establish whether generation finished, whether the answer exists on the server, or whether this is a rendering, synchronization, or generation failure. No permanent data loss is asserted.

Environment

  • Windows; locally queried OS version: 10.0.26200 (build 26200).
  • UI language in the screenshot: Simplified Chinese.
  • Report date: October 9, 2026 (UTC+08:00).
  • Installed Windows packages, verified read-only: OpenAI.ChatGPT-Desktop 1.2026.190.0 and OpenAI.Codex 26.1002.7124.0.
  • The exact package/build that produced the screenshot has not been established, so neither installed version is claimed as the affected runtime version.
  • Exact model and subscription: not collected.

Observed sequence / reproduction limits

  1. Open a conversation in the ChatGPT Windows desktop application.
  2. Send a follow-up question that leads to reasoning and web-search activity.
  3. Observe that the prior answer and new user message render, but the latest assistant turn displays only thinking/search activity with no answer body.

This describes the supplied incident, not a verified deterministic reproducer. Frequency, wait duration after search, navigation trigger, restart recovery, and behavior of the same conversation on the web have not been tested in this investigation.

Expected behavior

The assistant's answer should display in the conversation when available. If generation or history loading is still pending, the application should provide a clear ongoing status; if it fails, it should display an actionable error/retry state instead of leaving only thinking/search activity and an empty answer area.

Related reports

These share a visible missing-answer symptom, but this incident does not establish their completed-answer, navigation, or restart-recovery conditions. No shared root cause is claimed; please mark duplicate if appropriate.

Evidence and privacy

A screenshot was inspected for this report. It is not attached because it includes private conversation text and sidebar chat titles. The observable UI symptom is described above. No raw logs, conversation identifiers, account details, or private chat content are uploaded.
