[Bug] Thinking Effort Selector Shows Only "6" and Previous Messages Disappear #53404
Description
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
26.1007.30912
What subscription do you have?
ChatGPT Go
What platform is your computer?
Darwin 27.0.0 arm64 arm
What issue are you seeing?
I am experiencing two persistent UI issues in the ChatGPT macOS desktop app.
BUG 1: Thinking-effort selector
The selector displays only the number "6". I cannot find or select other thinking-effort levels. The interface does not explain what this number represents.
BUG 2: Previous messages disappearing
After I send a new message, earlier messages sometimes disappear from the visible conversation. This disrupts the conversation flow and makes the desktop app difficult to use.
Both issues have persisted for approximately 2–3 months.
I have been using ChatGPT through Chrome as a workaround because the desktop experience is unreliable.

What steps can reproduce the bug?
Feedback ID: cd01dad9-f1df-4e86-b4a1-61ac7c1250d5
What is the expected behavior?
BUG 1:
- Open the macOS desktop app.
- Start a new conversation.
- Open the thinking-effort selector.
- Observe that only "6" is displayed and no alternative levels are available.
BUG 2:
- Open an existing conversation.
- Send a message and wait for the response.
- Send another message.
- Observe whether earlier messages disappear from the visible conversation.
The second issue occurs intermittently. Both issues have persisted across multiple months.
-
The thinking-effort selector should clearly communicate the selected setting and provide the available options supported by the selected model.
-
Previous messages should remain visible and accessible when new messages are sent.
-
The desktop app should provide a consistent, reliable experience comparable to the web application.

Thanks for flagging these potential duplicates. I've reviewed the linked reports.
My report includes two symptoms:
6, with no alternative selectable levels.I understand that other reports describe disappearing responses, but I haven't found one documenting the specific thinking-effort selector issue. The exact trigger for my message-disappearance issue may also differ.
Please review the selector issue separately and determine whether the message-rendering symptom should be linked to an existing report.

My sister is experiencing the same selector symptom on Windows 11 with a ChatGPT Go account.
In Chat mode, the selector displays only “6”, with no selectable reasoning-effort levels. She first noticed this on 11 October 2026 and reported that the model and effort options had been available the previous day.
We reinstalled the app on 11 October and have now updated it again on 16 October. The selector issue persists after updating. I’ve attached a screenshot and included the current version below.
The same account offers a “Think” button on the website. The desktop app’s Work mode still provides working model and reasoning controls, so she is using Work as a workaround.
I’m corroborating the selector issue only; I haven’t confirmed the disappearing-message symptom.
The previous version was OpenAI.Codex 26.1007.9446.0, after the update it is OpenAI.Codex 26.1013.3656.0.

The account reproduces the same symptoms on a different Windows device. Updating did not resolve it.
Version now is OpenAI.Codex 26.1013.4894.0.
