[macOS][dot] Running dot-initiated chats/tasks do not appear in the app's chat list #53666

Open

Description

@JackNightman

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.1007.30912, build 20156. Last verified on October 12, 2026; not rechecked for this report on October 13.

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Pro.

What platform is your computer?

macOS 27.2, build 26B5101f, last verified on October 12, 2026.

What issue are you seeing?

Chats/tasks started by my dot agent are not appearing in the desktop app's chat list, even though the task has been started and is reported as running. I cannot find those conversations in the list to open them and follow their progress.

This report concerns visibility of dot-initiated tasks. It does not establish that execution stopped, task creation failed, or history was lost.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

User-reported workflow, not an independently verified clean-profile reproduction:

  1. Ask dot to start a separate task.
  2. The task is started/reported as running.
  3. Look for the resulting conversation in the desktop app's chat list.
  4. The conversation is not shown.

No additional test tasks were created for this report. Frequency, the exact list/filter involved, and whether this is specific to local-computer tasks or cloud tasks still need investigation.

What is the expected behavior?

User-facing tasks started through dot should be discoverable in the appropriate chat/task list so I can open the conversation and monitor its progress. If they belong in a different view, the app should provide a clear route to that view from the originating conversation.

The symptom overlaps, but this report has not established explicit project selection, a restart trigger, or cloud-only scope. Please consolidate if it belongs to an existing issue.

Submitted with assistance from my dot at my request. Private chat titles/content, task identifiers, local paths, account details, screenshots and raw logs are omitted.

Additional macOS reproduction — dot-created child task appears in Codex sidebar only after clicking its reference in Xerxes's message (October 14, 2026)

I can confirm the missing step in this report from my existing dot workflow. My dot is named Xerxes.

    Exact user-observed sequence:

    1. Xerxes creates a child task/chat and includes a reference to it in Xerxes's message (in the example shown in my screenshot, the clickable chat reference is labeled “Verificar asistente”).
    2. Before I click that reference, the child task is not visible in the Codex desktop left sidebar, so I cannot discover it there.
    3. I click the “Verificar asistente” reference inside Xerxes's message, which opens that existing child task.
    4. Only after that action does the task appear in the Codex sidebar.

Expected: A user-visible task created by a dot should automatically appear in the proper Codex task/chat sidebar view, without requiring me to find the originating dot message and click its task reference first. The sidebar should also retain discoverability, subject to any user-selected filters.

This is a task discovery/sidebar synchronization issue, not a report that Xerxes failed to create the task or that its history was deleted. The screenshot and before/after behavior are user-provided; I have not captured application logs or established the root cause. Persistence after app restart and whether other child tasks behave identically were not tested for this specific example.

Environment: ChatGPT/Codex macOS desktop, Apple Silicon; ChatGPT Pro. Session client identification reports Codex Desktop/26.1007.71326, but the exact About Codex build and macOS version were not independently checked for this reproduction. The screenshot was shared in the private conversation, not attached here.

This is closely related to the macOS cloud sidebar report #51675 and Windows link-to-reappear observation #52733; a common underlying cause remains unverified. Please investigate why the task is not discoverable at creation/dispatch but becomes visible after opening the original message link, and identify a supported permanent fix.

Submitted at the account owner's request through the connected GitHub integration.

    @omarpinarecords

October 16, 2026 — recurrence reported; task completion distinct from sidebar discovery

Current installation: ChatGPT for macOS 26.1013.31256 (build 20586), macOS 27.0.1 (26A434). The owner again reports a child task appearing in the sidebar only after opening its originating message chip. The child completed; task execution failure is not established.

A later owner-provided Local new-chat screenshot shows both the diagnostic task and the completed child in Recents. That is positive later visibility only. It is not an independently captured before/link/after reproduction and does not establish repair or persistence across app launches.

The previous owner report in this thread remains relevant. Acceptance should test whether the same newly created child appears in the intended sidebar without first opening its message reference, while preserving ongoing work.
