macOS Intel: Locked use fails immediately because Computer Use Installer is absent from official x64 package #54021

Open

Description

@Robineddk

Product and version

ChatGPT/Codex desktop 26.1007.71326, build 20398, production channel. Update check reports up_to_date.

Environment

Intel Mac (x86_64), macOS 15.8.1 (24H32). Observed October 14, 2026 (Europe/Berlin).

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Settings > Computer Use.
  2. Enable Locked use (German UI: Gesperrte Nutzung).

Actual behavior

Immediately fails with “Gesperrte Nutzung konnte nicht aktualisiert werden” (Unable to update Locked use). No administrator or Touch ID prompt appears. Restarting the app does not help.

Expected behavior

Install the required authorization component and enable the feature on supported configurations, or clearly explain that the feature is unavailable.

Diagnostic findings

  • codesign --verify --deep --strict /Applications/ChatGPT.app succeeds.
  • The installed activation code invokes the following resource-relative executable with install:
computer-use/Codex Computer Use.app/Contents/SharedSupport/Codex Computer Use Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Codex Computer Use Installer
  • That executable is absent from the installed app. A read-only status invocation at the expected path returns No such file or directory.
  • The complete central directory of the official x64 ZIP was also inspected (4,789 entries). Neither Codex Computer Use.app nor Codex Computer Use Installer is present.

No system authorization rules were modified. This suggests an x64 packaging issue; Intel support for Locked use has not been independently confirmed. Please confirm intended support and either supply the missing component or correct the offered activation flow.

The OpenAI Help Center support assistant suggested reporting this bug in this repository.
