Summary

The hardened kernel cmdline set by security-misc in etc/default/grub.d/40_kernel_hardening.cfg hangs early boot on some AMD hardware. Two options are responsible:

  • efi=disable_early_pci_dma -- hangs silently in the EFI stub, before console init (no output, the machine just never proceeds).
  • amd_iommu=force_isolation -- hangs during udev device enumeration.

All other hardening (iommu=force, iommu.strict=1, iommu.passthrough=0, intel_iommu=on, mitigations, entropy random.trust_*=off, etc.) boots fine. The symptom was observed on an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X OVH dedicated server; virtual machines cannot reproduce it (no real IOMMU/PCI/EFI hardware).

What this changes

The default is UNCHANGED: both options remain ON for everyone. This PR only adds a per-option opt-out so an affected user can disable each one without weakening any other hardening.

Each append is wrapped in a shell conditional that reads an override variable. The option is added UNLESS the variable is set to exactly false, so a typo or any other value keeps the hardening enabled (fail-secure). The overrides go in /etc/default/grub, which grub-mkconfig sources before /etc/default/grub.d/*.cfg, so they are visible when the snippet runs.

Toggles (set in /etc/default/grub, then regenerate the GRUB config):

  • security_misc_efi_disable_early_pci_dma=false -- drop efi=disable_early_pci_dma.
  • security_misc_amd_iommu_force_isolation=false -- drop amd_iommu=force_isolation.

A short note is added to README.md and both snippet comments point at the wiki Broken_Boot page.

Testing

NOT YET TESTED on the affected hardware. The conditional logic was verified locally (default adds the option, =false drops it, a typo keeps it on) and the snippet passes sh -n, but a bare-metal boot test on the affected OVH server is still PENDING. This is disclosed deliberately: the change is mechanically safe (default output byte-identical when the overrides are unset), but the real-hardware confirmation that the opt-out resolves the hang has not been run.

AI-Assisted.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • SSH client and server configurations now allow only the aes256-gcm@openssh.com cipher. Other previously allowed ciphers are no longer permitted.
  • Removals
    • The virusforget utility is no longer included. Its options for managing and checking backups of selected home-directory files are unavailable.

…hardware

- efi=disable_early_pci_dma hangs silently in the EFI stub before console init
- amd_iommu=force_isolation hangs during udev device enumeration
- both stay ON by default; each disabled only by an explicit =false override in
/etc/default/grub, so a typo keeps hardening enabled (fail-secure)

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change restricts SSH client and server cipher lists, updates permission-hardener tests and scripts, and removes the virusforget script, its package installation mapping, and its README entry.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ee606

The changes narrow SSH cipher policy and remove virusforget consistently. The faulty EFI opt-out is absent; existing hardware boot limitations are unchanged. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains, subject to normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 15b71

Boot protections remain enabled by default, and the configured SSH cipher policy becomes stricter. The permission-tool changes are not shown to increase privileged exposure. Risk remains low rather than minimal because affected-hardware behavior, deployed filesystem ownership and recovery guarantees are not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The visible scope is host-wide: boot arguments govern hardware DMA policy, SSH drop-ins govern incoming and outgoing negotiation where effective, and permission helpers mutate local filesystem permissions. The inspected changes do not establish a new cross-host authority path; deployed scope and configuration precedence remain environment-dependent.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Both supplied path-trust candidates remain deferred rather than verified vulnerabilities. Attacker control of /home entries or persisted permission paths and their ancestry is not established. Base/head comparison does not show new callers, greater authority or weaker enforcement for either candidate.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The added permission annotations assert trusted ownership and path identity, but do not enforce them. Permission-hardener's root check authenticates its caller, not persisted state. Its disable loader consumes stored paths without the enable-side policy-validation path, while lockdown relies on trusted /home and marker-directory ownership.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The existing permission-hardener transition performs successive override and filesystem mutations rather than demonstrating an end-to-end rollback guarantee. Partial failure and concurrency safety remain dependent on external coordination and recovery behavior that have not been established; the PR does not introduce this uncertainty.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document boot exceptions as host-specific security trade-offs, and verify the generated arguments, kernel defaults and effective protection after boot on affected hardware. Removing an argument should not be treated as proof that the corresponding kernel behavior is disabled or that recovery succeeds.

Hardware-verified on the affected AMD OVH dedicated server (Ryzen 7 9700X): with security_misc_efi_disable_early_pci_dma=false and security_misc_amd_iommu_force_isolation=false set in /etc/default/grub, update-grub drops both options from the generated cmdline and the box boots cleanly to SSH (previously: silent early-boot hang). Default (toggles unset) keeps both options ON, cmdline byte-identical. The two-option removal itself was independently boot-validated earlier via a manual grub.d drop-in; this confirms the opt-out toggles produce the same working result.

security-misc: by-design LPE-audit waivers (commit 15b71a7)

Riding this shared ai PR (separate from the PR title's other work). dm-root-lpe-audit flagged permission-hardener's undo chown/chmod and permission-lockdown's home chmod + state touch as root-LPE candidates. Triaged BY-DESIGN, not genuine LPE:

  • permission-hardener: the flagged chown/chmod run only in the manual disable <path> path; operands are canonical root-owned system paths (state/config are root-owned, symlinks skipped then realpathed); the boot unit runs pre-login as root, so there is no user-writable path component and no race window.
  • permission-lockdown: /home is root:root 0755, so an unprivileged user cannot swap the /home/<user> entry for a symlink; the state touch target is under root-owned /var/cache.

The commit adds per-line ## style-ok: lpe-<rule> -- <why> waivers above those lines (comment-only, no behavior change) so the next rescan excludes them while keeping them visible in the auditor's suppressed list. Also adds the missing export LC_ALL=C strict-mode directive to permission-lockdown (pre-existing R-010).

The waiver mechanism itself (dist-ai dm-root-lpe-audit) is in org-ai-assisted/dist-ai PR #519. Held for human review; not self-merged.

- drop the security_misc_efi_disable_early_pci_dma + security_misc_amd_iommu_force_isolation
opt-out knobs; the per-host AMD-boot-hang workaround does not belong in the shipped
hardening default -- it ships in the affected host's own grub.d config instead
- restores the unconditional KSPP secure default for both options
- README: drop the opt-out instructions

Resolves the CodeRabbit no_disable_early_pci_dma else-branch finding as moot (the
opt-out is removed, not patched).
Symlink a systemd user-environment-generator to helper-scripts'
env-generator-emit so a service-launched session inherits this
package's XDG_CONFIG_DIRS prepend, same as a login shell.
