Add a proxy to intercept all network traffic

I'm not sure the best way to do this, but the intention is to strip advertisements and compress what remains with mod_pagespeed or similar. This likely means that either Apache or Nginx are preferred.

I'm not sure if this should be transparent or not. Maybe we can start off by making it require configuration by the user to turn on the HTTP proxy, and then investigate ways to make it transparent later.

Can you explain me the purpose to use a proxy?
If just as the ADblock system, we can use a local dns resolver to redirect all AD domains to the blackhole.
And why mod_pagespeed ? We have to use something like SNI proxy for proxying HTTPS, I don't see any profits with proxying HTTPS traffic, just more overhead to CPU.

Yes, the proxy is for ad blocking and mod_pagespeed. Since I expect this will be used on many mobile devices while traveling, I want to minimize data usage. mod_pagespeed will compress what remains after blocking ads.

I initially thought to combine these two services into the same proxy, but maybe it is easier to split them up. How do you propose implementing DNS-based ad blocking? I will close this issue and we can discuss the topic on issue #14.
