Current MCP Scope System

The MCP server currently uses three broad scope types:

• mcp:all - Access to all workspace scripts and flows
• mcp:favorites - Access only to favorited scripts and flows
• mcp:hub:{integrations} - Access to hub scripts for specific integrations

Limitations:

• Users cannot select specific scripts or flows to expose
• All scripts/flows in a workspace (or favorites) are exposed
• No per-resource granularity for API endpoints
• Hub integrations support filtering by app, but not individual scripts

Existing Token Scope Infrastructure

Windmill already has a robust scope system (backend/windmill-api/src/scopes.rs):

• Format: {domain}:{action}[:{kind}][:{resources}]
• Supports wildcards (e.g., f/folder/*)
• Supports comma-separated resource lists
• Hierarchical permissions (write includes read)

MCP Tool Types

The MCP server exposes three types of tools:

1. Scripts - User scripts from workspace
2. Flows - User flows from workspace
3. Endpoint Tools - Auto-generated Windmill API endpoints (from OpenAPI spec)

1. New MCP Scope Format

Replace the current broad scopes with resource-specific scopes that align with Windmill's existing scope system:

4. Tool Filtering: list_tools() filters available tools based on scope configuration

   • Verify scripts outside folder are not accessible

4. Backward Compatibility:

   • Test existing tokens with mcp:all still work
   • Test mcp:favorites scope still works
