Email summary of automatic and available updates #7934

Open

Description

@DavidePrincipi

Administrators do not know what automatic updates did overnight, nor which updates are waiting to be applied, unless they open the Software Center. An email summary keeps them informed without logging in, and helps them check that automatic updates are working as expected.

Note

This issue originally also requested a UI switch to opt out of automatic updates, and update-related alerts. The opt-out switch was implemented by #8101 (core 3.22.0), from the #7976 design. Alerts for failed updates, updates not applied for a long time, and pending reboots are now part of the #8260 design.

Proposed solution

Provide email notifications:

  • with an active subscription, a summary of the automatic updates performed: which core and application versions were installed, and any failure
  • without a subscription (community users), a weekly summary of the available updates

Alternative solutions

Check the Software Center manually.

Additional context

  • Users requested also strict update scheduling for critical application instances.
