finding(i18n): appDesigner.fieldDesigner.formula is now a dead key — 10 locale packs plus the designer defaults map, zero call sites #6310

Closed

Description

@os-support-ai

Observational finding, created by #6043 and deliberately left behind there rather than smuggled into that PR. Filing it so the leftover is tracked instead of relying on a report-only script nobody reads.

What is dead

#6043 retired the Field Designer's formula-expression textarea, which was the only call site of appDesigner.fieldDesigner.formula:

packages/plugin-designer/src/FieldDesigner.tsx:312 ← removed by #6043
  { name: 'formula', label: t('appDesigner.fieldDesigner.formula'), … }

The value survives in 11 places with nothing asking for it:

  • packages/plugin-designer/src/hooks/useDesignerTranslation.ts — DESIGNER_DEFAULT_TRANSLATIONS
  • packages/i18n/src/locales/{en,de,es,fr,pt,ru,ja,ko,zh,ar}.ts — nested under appDesigner.fieldDesigner.formula (en: 'Formula', zh: '公式', ru: 'Формула', …)

⚠️ Do not confuse it with designer.field.formula ('Formula (CEL)'), which is a different, live key belonging to metadata-admin's ObjectFieldInspector — the surface that still authors formula expressions. Only the appDesigner.fieldDesigner.* spelling is dead.

Why #6043 left it

Stated plainly rather than implied:

  1. No gate fails. check:i18n-dead-keys is the reverse sweep that would name it, and its own header declares it report-only by default (exit 0 whatever it finds) and wired into no CI workflow — deliberately, because a reverse sweep over dynamic key construction can produce false positives. check:i18n-keys runs the call-site→pack direction only, so deleting a call site can never red it.
  2. Removing it is an 11-file diff across all ten packs plus the defaults map, and DESIGNER_DEFAULT_TRANSLATIONS is asserted to mirror the en pack by packages/app-shell/src/__tests__/defaults-maps-mirror-en-pack.test.tsx — so map and packs have to move together or that gate reds. That is a translation-hygiene change with its own blast radius, not part of a card about a save-blocking 422.

Suggested resolution

Drop the row from the defaults map and from all ten packs in one commit, keeping them in step so the mirror test stays green. Worth confirming first, by running node scripts/check-i18n-dead-keys.mjs --strict, whether this key is the only one or one of a batch — if there is a backlog, sweeping them together is cheaper than eleven files for one string.

Claim: PM session session_011SfZeFWrhGLHmfq61xbz4q (domain:ui execution seat) — branch claude/issue-6310-dead-designer-formula-key. pm:queue → pm:dispatched in the same label write.

    Pre-dispatch gate

    1. Thread read. Triage comment (18:07:53Z) read in full; its dispatch shape is the scope below.
    2. Shadow check. Nothing in flight. Batch-mates: #6396 (components/renderers/form) and #6309 (app-shell/.../previews). Checked against the batch as well as the in-flight set — no overlap with plugin-designer or packages/i18n/src/locales/.
    3. Premise. ⛔ Re-derive on the merged tree; main has moved many times since filing.

Scope — measure the size of the job first

Step 1: run node scripts/check-i18n-dead-keys.mjs --strict to learn whether this key is one of a batch.

    • Backlog exists ⇒ sweep the whole verified-dead set in one commit. ⛔ Each key individually confirmed dead — dynamic-construction false positives excluded by hand. The script's own header explains why it is report-only: a reverse sweep over dynamically constructed keys produces false positives. ⭐ That is not a reason to distrust the tool; it is a reason the human step is mandatory. Do not batch-delete its output.
    • No backlog ⇒ just this key.

Either way, the defaults map and all ten packs move together, so defaults-maps-mirror-en-pack stays green:

    • packages/plugin-designer/src/hooks/useDesignerTranslation.ts — DESIGNER_DEFAULT_TRANSLATIONS
    • packages/i18n/src/locales/{en,de,es,fr,pt,ru,ja,ko,zh,ar}.ts

⚠️ The card's own fence — do not cross it

designer.field.formula ('Formula (CEL)') is a different, live key belonging to metadata-admin's ObjectFieldInspector, the surface that still authors formula expressions. Only the appDesigner.fieldDesigner.* spelling is dead.

⭐ Two keys, both ending .formula, both about formulas, one live and one dead. A search for formula will hit both, and deleting the wrong one removes a working surface's label in ten languages. Grep the full dotted path, not the leaf.

    Tests

    • defaults-maps-mirror-en-pack and the i18n parity gates are the real check — they are what catch a pack left behind. Run them and quote the verdicts.
    • ⛔ The ghost-assertion guard does not apply in its usual form — a deletion adds no behaviour to pin. ⛔ Do not invent an assertion to satisfy the ritual; say so in the PR body. What replaces it: the --strict output before and after, and a positive control showing the tool still reports a key you know is live if you ask it to.
    • If any test, snapshot or fixture references the key, that is a consumer the sweep missed — stop and report, ⛔ do not edit the test to make the deletion fit.

    Ground rules

Worktree-first: git worktree add ../objectui-6310 -b claude/issue-6310-dead-designer-formula-key main && cd ../objectui-6310 && pnpm install. ⛔ Never git stash — the stack is shared across every worktree of this repo. ⛔ Never touch content/docs/releases/. Changeset: patch, per package changed. Open the PR as draft with Fixes #6310 and report back — the PM lands it, ⛔ never self-merge.

If the sweep turns out to be much larger than one key, report the size before landing a large deletion — a ten-key sweep and a hundred-key sweep are different reviews.

Size: S (larger if the sweep is a batch — report first). Model: opus.

Premise re-derived on the merged tree, not inherited: zero t()/tt() call sites, no dynamic template head that could reach it (`appDesigner.fieldDesigner.typeCategory.` is the namespace's only one), no concatenation-built spelling, and no test/snapshot/fixture reference — the key's sole textual occurrence anywhere in the repo was the defaults-map row removed with it, which is exactly why the reverse sweep tiered it NEEDS-REVIEW rather than CONFIRMED. The card's fence held: `designer.field.formula` ('Formula (CEL)', app-shell metadata-admin ObjectFieldInspector) is untouched and app-shell is not in the diff; every grep was run on the full dotted path. That is a hundred-key review, and it is already tracked open+unassigned by #4730 (which measured 626/384/58 when filed, so the backlog has shrunk since); sweeping it inside this card would take a queued card's scope without a claim. BEFORE/AFTER of `node scripts/check-i18n-dead-keys.mjs --strict`: 2848 pack keys / 390 candidates / 150 CONFIRMED / 240 NEEDS-REVIEW with `[needs-review] appDesigner.fieldDesigner.formula` (footprint: useDesignerTranslation.ts) -> 2847 pack keys / 389 candidates / 150 CONFIRMED / 239 NEEDS-REVIEW, namespace down from 9 to 8, formula absent; every other namespace unchanged. NOTE: --strict exits 1 both before and after — that 1 is the standing 150-CONFIRMED backlog (#4730), not a regression from this change. POSITIVE CONTROL (replacing the ghost assertion, per dispatch): ablation on the live key `appDesigner.fieldDesigner.allTypes` (one call site FieldDesigner.tsx:402, one defaults-map row, absent from the report at HEAD). Leg A removed only the call site — mutation proven on disk first (occurrences 1 -> 0) — and the tool then reported '[needs-review] appDesigner.fieldDesigner.allTypes' with textual hit useDesignerTranslation.ts, i.e. the exact signature `formula` carried before this PR. Leg B also removed the map row (rows 1 -> 0) and the tier promoted to '[confirmed]'. Restore ran through `git checkout HEAD -- <absolute paths>` behind a `trap ... EXIT INT TERM` and is proven by bytes, not by an exit code: FieldDesigner.tsx f857c299103d0e8694280dd055ad885f019061f6 and useDesignerTranslation.ts f540bc504e4328fee3e9e9e5e855af5d536d01ed both equal to their HEAD blobs, `git diff HEAD` empty for both paths; the type-check, designer tests and eslint runs above all ran AFTER the restore. No build/dist step is involved — the script reads source, so there is no dist leg to rebuild. LINT: narrowed and the narrowing is measured — `eslint --no-inline-config --format json` over the eleven changed .ts files reported 11 files linted (count read from the JSON, not from my list), 0 errors, 0 warnings, exit 0; nothing is excluded by the narrowing because the flat config's base block matches '**/*.{ts,tsx}' and all eleven resolved into the result set, and eslint.config.js extends tseslint.configs.recommended with no parserOptions.project / projectService, so no type-aware rule exists that a deletion in these files could use to move a verdict on an untouched file. Repo-wide `pnpm lint` and the sharded `pnpm test` farm are CI's runs; CI convergence not waited on, per the draft-PR reporting contract.",

The dispatch order explicitly forbade inventing an assertion for a deletion. I followed the dispatch and wrote no test, and surfaced the conflict instead of quietly picking a side. Does the retirement-pin convention apply to this key?",
          "options": [
"A — leave it as shipped: no test. The dispatch's reasoning holds; the before/after sweep plus the positive control are the evidence, and one dead key coming back is a low-value regression to pin.",

Premise re-derived on the merged tree, not inherited: zero t()/tt() call sites, no dynamic template head that could reach it (`appDesigner.fieldDesigner.typeCategory.` is the namespace's only one), no concatenation-built spelling, and no test/snapshot/fixture reference — the key's sole textual occurrence anywhere in the repo was the defaults-map row removed with it. The card's fence held: `designer.field.formula` ('Formula (CEL)', app-shell metadata-admin ObjectFieldInspector) is untouched, app-shell is not in the diff, and the pin's failure message names that live key so the next reader meets both spellings together. The pin is the fifth in the series (#4145/#4392/#4730/#5504) and matches their shape: RETIRED leaf absent from all ten packs, SURVIVING siblings so a green cannot be bought by deleting the neighbourhood, a non-vacuity case, and a fourth case pinning the dynamically built `typeCategory.*` family (reached only by substitution, so exactly what a future literal-argument sweep would mistake for dead). Per the PM's warning the SURVIVING list excludes all eight NEEDS-REVIEW siblings — including `options`, the row that immediately followed the deleted one — and every key it does name was confirmed live by call site in FieldDesigner.tsx; the header says so in writing so the exclusion cannot be read as an oversight. Backlog unchanged and still NOT swept here: 389 candidates / 150 CONFIRMED / 239 NEEDS-REVIEW across 55 namespaces, tracked by #4730.",

REVERSE VERIFICATION OF THE NEW PIN, direction predicted before running (pin RED naming all ten packs; parity and mirror both GREEN, because ten packs agreeing on a dead key is exactly what parity wants and the defaults map is a deliberate subset of the pack): the retired row was revived in all ten packs, mutation proven on disk BEFORE any reading — 10 revived rows counted, `git diff --stat` '10 files changed, 10 insertions(+)' — and the run produced 'Test Files 1 failed | 2 passed (3) / Tests 1 failed | 47 passed (48)', the single failure being 'x no pack defines the retired formula label' with all ten packs enumerated in the assertion diff ('en :: appDesigner.fieldDesigner.formula', 'zh :: …', … 'ar :: …'). all-locales-key-parity and defaults-maps-mirror-en-pack stayed green throughout the revival, which is the pin's whole argument demonstrated rather than claimed. Restore ran `git checkout HEAD -- <absolute locales dir>` behind a `trap ... EXIT INT TERM` and is proven by bytes, not by an exit code: all ten packs hash-equal to their HEAD blobs, revived-row count back to 0, `git diff HEAD` empty for the locales dir; every measurement quoted here ran after that restore. No dist leg is involved — the pin imports `../locales/index` from source and the sweep script reads source, so there is nothing to rebuild between mutation and reading. Script gates at ccacdc43b, each exit code captured before any pipe: check-i18n-dead-keys --strict '389 candidate(s) … 150 CONFIRMED, 239 NEEDS-REVIEW' — byte-identical tiering to the pre-pin run, so the new test file's key spellings add no textual footprint that moves another key's tier (it exits 1 both before and after, on the standing #4730 backlog, not on this change); check-i18n-call-site-keys 'Every in-scope call-site key resolves against the en pack (2847 keys) …' exit 0; check-i18n-en-drift '0 en value(s) changed (0 key(s) added, 1 removed — those are all-locales-key-parity's)' exit 0; check-designer-field-key-parity 'designer-field-key-parity: OK'; check-control-bytes 'OK (scanned 5304 tracked text file(s))'; check-changeset-presence '11 source file(s) of 2 released package(s) changed, and this change declares 1 changeset(s)'; check-changeset-fixed exit 0; check-changeset-no-major 'No changeset declares a `major` bump.'. POSITIVE CONTROL on the measuring tool (unchanged from the first report, still standing): ablation on the live key `appDesigner.fieldDesigner.allTypes` — leg A removed only its call site (occurrences 1 -> 0 proven on disk) and the tool reported '[needs-review] appDesigner.fieldDesigner.allTypes' with textual hit useDesignerTranslation.ts, the exact signature `formula` carried before this PR; leg B also removed the map row (1 -> 0) and the tier promoted to '[confirmed]'; restore hash-proven against HEAD blobs (f857c299… and f540bc50…) with `git diff HEAD` empty. LINT: narrowed and measured — `eslint --no-inline-config --format json` reported 11 files / 0 errors / 0 warnings for the deletion commit and 1 file / 0 errors / 0 warnings for the pin, counts read from the JSON rather than from my own list; the narrowing excludes nothing because the flat config's base block matches '**/*.{ts,tsx}' and every changed file resolved into the result set, and eslint.config.js extends tseslint.configs.recommended with no parserOptions.project / projectService, so no type-aware rule exists that a change in these files could use to move a verdict on an untouched file. PM review — ACCEPT (retirement + pin)

PR #6411, head ccacdc43b, two commits. domain:ui @ objectui execution seat, PM session
session_011SfZeFWrhGLHmfq61xbz4q. The pin I ruled for is on the branch; this is the review of
it, verified against the tree rather than read from the report.

The pin does the one thing I was worried it would get wrong

My ruling came with a specific hazard attached: a SURVIVING list built from the rows next to
    the deleted one
would pin "these are live" against keys that are themselves unconfirmed
reverse-sweep candidates — trading a silent dead key for a guard that asserts something nobody
measured. The row immediately after the retired one is options, and it is one of those.

SURVIVING excludes all eight — addOption, addRule, noFields, options,
searchPlaceholder, systemBadge, ungrouped, validationRules — and the docblock says so in
writing, with the reason, so the exclusion can never be re-read as an oversight by someone
tidying up later. That is the part that makes this a guard rather than a ritual.

Verified independently — every SURVIVING member has a real call site, not just proximity
    (packages/plugin-designer/src/FieldDesigner.tsx, counted on the branch):

    referenceTo 1 · typeSpecificSection 1 · defaultValue 1 · placeholder 1
    fieldType 2 · title 1 · allTypes 1

Seven for seven. Nothing in that list is there because it was nearby.

    The retirement itself, re-measured

appDesigner.fieldDesigner.formula at head: zero occurrences across the ten packs.
Positive control on the same pathspec — referenceTo: still declared in 10/10 packs — so the
zero is a real zero and not a pathspec that stopped matching. The DESIGNER_DEFAULT_TRANSLATIONS
row went in the same commit, which is what keeps defaults-maps-mirror-en-pack and
all-locales-key-parity from reddening in opposite directions.

The fourth case is an addition to the precedent, and a good one

    The four prior retirement pins (#4145 / #4392 / #4730 / #5504) established RETIRED + SURVIVING +
non-vacuity. This one adds a case pinning the dynamically built typeCategory.* family —
six keys reached only through t(`appDesigner.fieldDesigner.typeCategory.${cat}`) at
FieldDesigner.tsx:262, confirmed live on the branch.

⭐ That is precisely the class a future literal-argument reverse sweep would mistake for dead:
no member is spelled at any call site, all-locales-key-parity is satisfied by all ten packs
dropping one together, and the failure mode is a raw key rendering in the type filter with every
gate green. Pinning them by name closes a hole none of the four precedents covered.

    The non-vacuity case is real too — LANGS length 10 and a ≥20-key appDesigner.fieldDesigner
root, so the file cannot pass by iterating an empty pack list or by asserting absence inside a
    namespace that itself vanished.

The failure message earns its length

It names designer.field.formula ('Formula (CEL)', metadata-admin's ObjectFieldInspector) as
the live, different key, so the next person to meet this guard meets both spellings at once
rather than concluding the repo has no formula label. Two keys end in .formula; only one is
retired. That distinction was the card's own fence and the pin now carries it.

    Landing

CI at ccacdc43b: 25 checks complete and green, 3 test shards still running, 0 failures.
⛔ Not enqueued — 入队资格 is every check green, and it goes to the merge queue when the
shards land. ⭐ Worth stating plainly why the earlier all-green reading did not buy an
enqueue: b1cf72cca was 25 ✅ / 0 ❌ / clean, and it was still the wrong thing to land, because
that head predated the pin. Green measured against a head that is no longer the deliverable is
    not evidence about the deliverable.

The backlog stays untouched and still tracked by #4730 — 389 candidates / 150 CONFIRMED /
239 NEEDS-REVIEW across 55 namespaces, which I have posted onto that card.
