[Windows] Local projects returned by project/list but missing from Desktop sidebar #48501

Description

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.924.2738.0

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

Windows 10 22H2 (10.0.19045), x64

What issue are you seeing?

After an unexpected Windows restart, all 10 local Codex projects disappeared from the Desktop sidebar, although their conversations still appear under Recents.

The local database remains intact and passes PRAGMA quick_check. It contains 10 projects, 10 project roots, and 94 threads. A direct project/list request to the app-server returns all 10 projects correctly, including their IDs, names, roots, positions, and timestamps.

All 10 project root folders are accessible. However, the Codex Desktop Projects section remains empty and does not render any of them.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Feedback ID: no-active-thread-01a0dede-8958-7512-b7df-59174a411566

What is the expected behavior?

Codex Desktop should display the 10 local projects returned by project/list in the Projects section of the sidebar and group the 93 associated conversations under their respective projects. The single intentionally unassigned conversation should remain only under Recents.

Additional information

Diagnostics:

  • SQLite PRAGMA quick_check: ok
  • Projects: 10
  • Project roots: 10
  • Threads: 94
  • Threads with project_id: 93
  • Threads without project_id: 1
  • Invalid project references: 0
  • Accessible project root folders: 10 of 10
  • Direct app-server project/list result: all 10 projects returned correctly
  • Microsoft Store package: OpenAI.Codex_26.924.2738.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0
  • Package status: Ok

Troubleshooting already performed:

  • Verified database integrity and project/thread associations
  • Verified all physical project roots
  • Rebuilt and verified the local project sidebar state
  • Cleared UI caches
  • Isolated and regenerated local UI storage
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the current official Microsoft Store build

None of these steps restored the projects in the sidebar. This appears to be a Desktop UI/state synchronization problem because the app-server can read and return the projects correctly.

I can provide redacted diagnostic logs and the full project/list output. I prefer not to upload the complete SQLite databases or session files because they contain private conversation history.

    @sridharkalaibala

I am seeing a similar problem on Windows desktop package OpenAI.Codex 26.1007.2314.0 (bundled codex-cli 0.162.0-alpha.17.2).

The desktop list_projects capability returns an empty array. A direct project/list request using the bundled app-server returns all 10 saved local projects. All project root folders exist and SQLite PRAGMA quick_check returns ok.

In this case, all 149 stored threads had null project_id. After making a consistent SQLite backup, 64 active chats with unambiguous exact folder matches were reassigned to their existing projects through thread/metadata/update. The desktop still returns zero projects after switching sidebar grouping to project.

The projects disappeared before the latest update; the exact onset is unknown. There was also a sudden switch to a new chat while typing on October 10, 2026. The previous saved conversation was subsequently found intact and reopened. Whether these symptoms are related is unknown.

No private session transcripts, raw logs, local folder names, or databases are attached. Can the team investigate desktop project hydration and loss of thread-to-project associations?
