Remove 5h and weekly limits, instead have a monthly pool #5372
It has been said before, and I don't understand why those limits are even in.
All it does is create an atmosphere of uncertainty, where you're constantly checking if you can run the next query or if you're going to be limited.
Neither the 5h nor the weekly limit makes any sense.
We pay a monthly subscription. With it we have some token allowance.
Right now about 5M per 7 days.
Why not have 20M (or 25M rather) or how much ever it is and per month?
And if you used up your contingent, wait until the month passed or buy more contingent.
3rd party offers that use codex or gpt-5 are not limited like this.
All it does is annoy us and hinder productivity, create a negative atmosphere.
And dedicated coding plans would be even better.
If I have a Teams and a Plus account (or Pro), I only use 1 account for Chat, and I use Chat only because it's not limited (at least I don't perceive any limits) like codex is. So I'm paying for both but only use 1. And I'm paying for both because of the 5h and weekly limits.
Long-term I won't be paying for either but use a 3rd party provider. I'm already cancelling the Plus subscription and moving that to a 3rd party provider, because for the same price I get more than double the usage and no limits.
And I would've done the same with the Teams subscription if I wasn't subscribed for a year in advance.
We are actively looking at varying things here, thanks for the suggestion. Wanted to discuss the following a bit to understand it, do you have more details on

Factory AI offers 20M tokens * 0.5 for $20/m.
The Plus subscription costs about the same.
I'm already paying for Teams and have Plus because the limits aren't enough.
Factory AI doesn't limit me every 5h or weekly. I have my token amount and I use the tokens and pay a little extra when over the 20M.
They seem to have an efficient caching mechanism so token usage is quite low, lower with gpt-5 high than with codex, but quite low.
But that's because I keep using a single model, codex.
That sentence means, I'm cancelling Plus and when Teams runs out I won't renew it. That will be in the middle of August next year. That's what I mean with long-term.
The Factory offer is pure code and lasts longer and doesn't have those 5h/weekly limits.
So a pure code subscription would be preferred.
They're playing at the customer using up those 20M tokens and then passing the barrier. Post 20M tokens they're asking for 2.7x the price per 1M tokens.
I have originally subscribed to Teams because I thought I could give my mom her paid subscription, since it said 2 seats. But those 2 seats are in a shared space, so I'm paying 10€ more per month for what exactly? 15 Pro messages. No Sora 2 in the EU and the old Sora is gone.
And I'm paying for Plus because of the limits and because I can't afford a Pro subscription.
Chatting technically (having a technical chat) with ChatGPT is a tedious hell full of mistakes and refining.
ChatGPT is not configured for technical chat. It invents stuff that doesn't exist, doesn't lint, changes variables one message to the next, it a nightmare, and it always uses outdated references.
Using codex means I get a technical chat. I can tell it to create an argocd kustomize config for that project, don't have to copy/paste things around. I can ask GPt-5-High to create SPEC/Milestones/Tasks.
So long story short. I'm looking for something that helps me do my job. My usage is ~97% technical. Today Factory might be the platform to provide it, tomorrow someone else. But as long as those limits are in I won't stay to pay, because I hate the pressure.
I can't deal with having to be afraid of the next time a limit hits.
I'm doing /status every time after a message to check the limits.
That is not sane.
I don't want to live like this. Sounds dramatic, but that's how I feel about it.
And that's why I'm cancelling Plus and if I wasn't bound to Teams for a year I would've cancelled that too.
And I hate the red message that wants to upsell me a Pro subscription.
I have a Claude subscription, also 1 year, cancelled, because of the 5h/weekly limits.
I barely use it, for the same reason. And I have a z.AI subscription. $30/month for 1 year.
And while it's far from the codex quality, at least it doesn't limit me like codex or claude do.
So I can experiment and eventually that GLM-4.6 model reaches its goal as well, it just takes longer and requires more fixing.
But codex is king, but the 5h/weekly limits need to go.
I agree that the limits are very problematic. For example, we have paid for a ChatGPT Business plan subscription to test all product features in our company. Yesterday I've reached 100% usage on my weekly limit for my account on the plan and I cannot find a way to be able to use Codex (both in CLI and in the IDE) even when we charged the account with 100 EUR of additional token budget, by using an API key. I thought that's possible, because if I switch Codex CLI / IDE plugin to use the apikey instead of my ChatGPT account login, then I will use the resources that we have paid for instead.
What can I do now? Do I need to wait 3 more days for a weekly limit renewal? It seems like so.
I thought that allright, the limit is there because of the 34 EUR price for individual account needs some limitations, but when someone reaches the limit, we can pay for more usage - it seems not to be the case, so the tool after 4 days of use becomes useless until the weekly limit is reset. Moreover I cannot for example, say, change an individual person account in the company to use the Pro plan (where I suspect there is no such limit - or maybe I'm wrong?), we'd have to upgrade the whole plan. Now it's a big issue, because now we have ~10 people there for testing, but we need 50+ developers. Most of them during testing have used 20-30% of their weekly limit and seem to be ok with it. So we suspect we'd not need everyone to have the Pro plan - most developers maybe could use the lower limits.
I'm going to close this in favor of #4217, which is effectively the same feature request, and it has more upvotes. By consolidating feature requests, it will help the codex team prioritize.
