[macOS][Cloud Project tasks] Entire Copy submenu missing, while Local Project tasks retain it #54020

Screenshot-confirmed clarification — October 14, 2026

The entire Copy submenu is absent on the Codex Cloud Project task menu, not merely two commands within it. The owner supplied side-by-side screenshots of the current desktop task context menus:

Observed Cloud Project task menu Observed Local Project task menu
Rename, Pin, Section, Share, Open on chatgpt.com, Archive, Delete, plus Move to project / Remove from project. No Copy menu at all. Rename, Pin, Mark as unread, Project, Section, Continue in, Share, Copy ▶, Open in new window, Archive. The Copy submenu visibly contains Copy deeplink, Copy as Markdown, and Copy working directory.

The screenshots establish this Cloud-versus-Local context-menu difference on the user's macOS desktop client. The Local Project classification is also owner-confirmed. They do not independently establish why the menu is missing or that every Copy subcommand should work on every remote task.

Reproduce: Open an existing task associated with a ChatGPT/Codex Cloud Project; use its sidebar/task context menu; observe no Copy entry. Compare an existing Local Project task in the same desktop app: Copy ▶ and its three subcommands are present.

Impact / requested behavior: Restore a discoverable, supported Copy deeplink and Copy as Markdown for eligible Cloud Project tasks, including dot-created tasks; provide a clear copyable task/session identifier. The owner also needs a supported way to copy Cloud Project IDs (or a link encoding the correct Project identity). Neither screenshot shows a formerly existing Copy Project ID command, so that identity-access need must not be misstated as a proven regression of such an individual command. If Copy working directory is not meaningful for a cloud executor, indicate that limitation explicitly; a remote working directory must not be misrepresented as a local filesystem path.

Project ID versus desktop mirror clarification (owner, October 14): The owner clarified that the “very long ID” associated with Cloud Projects is the ChatGPT Cloud Project's g-p-... identifier, also used as a directory name in the app-managed project mirror under ~/.codex/.chatgpt-projects/<project-id>/. This is not an assertion that a past “Copy Project ID” command existed, or that the current Copy working directory action previously copied that mirror path. The request is to restore usable Copy controls for cloud tasks and a supported, clearly labeled way to copy the associated Project ID (and, if applicable, the separately identified local mirror path), without treating the mirror as a cloud-executor working directory. This is based on the owner's clarification plus known project-mirror identity; it is not a new app UI test.

Key distinction: Open on chatgpt.com is available for the Cloud task but is not a replacement for the missing Copy submenu or direct task-ID and project-ID copying. The observed failure is absence of the menu itself, not a clipboard write failure.

The original issue report remains below for provenance. Both screenshots were supplied privately and are not uploaded publicly, because they expose account/project and conversation context. No new task or controlled clean-profile reproduction was created.

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

The session identifies the macOS desktop client as Codex Desktop/26.1007.71326 on October 14, 2026. The About Codex build was not independently checked for this report.

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Pro.

What platform is your computer?

macOS on Apple Silicon (arm64).

What issue are you seeing?

For existing Codex Cloud tasks in the desktop app, the task's Copy actions have become unavailable or are no longer discoverable. In particular, the owner reports that the options formerly identified as Copy deeplink and Copy directory / Copy working directory are missing for cloud-task conversations. This makes it difficult to retrieve/copy a stable task link and working-directory information; the owner also needs a reliable route to the task's technical ID.

Scope clarification (corrected): This concerns the missing Copy menu on tasks associated with ChatGPT Cloud Projects, including convenient access to the task's deeplink/session ID and the associated Cloud Project ID. The owner also recognizes Cloud Project IDs in the per-project folder names of the desktop-managed local mirror under ~/.codex/.chatgpt-projects/<project-id>/. A Project ID is not a task/thread ID; that mirror folder is neither proof of remote execution nor the cloud task's remote working directory. This is distinct from the dot-child sidebar visibility issue. No task deletion is established. Please distinguish Copy session ID, Copy chat deep link, Copy conversation path, Copy working directory, and Copy Cloud Project ID / local mirror path, and clarify each action's cloud-versus-local scope.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

User-reported sequence on an existing account; no independent fresh-task test or clean-profile reproduction was performed:

  1. Open ChatGPT/Codex Desktop on macOS and navigate to an existing Codex Cloud task (including tasks accessed through a dot-created task reference when missing from the sidebar).
  2. Open the cloud task's thread menu or Copy submenu.
  3. Look for Copy deeplink and Copy working directory / directory.
  4. Those previously available or expected entries cannot be found for the cloud task, preventing one-click copying from its task UI.
  5. A separate issue, [macOS][dot] Running dot-initiated chats/tasks do not appear in the app's chat list #53666, documents how dot-created cloud task entries can be missing from the sidebar until the owner clicks their reference in the dot message. This report concerns the Copy/ID actions after a cloud task is opened, not that sidebar-discovery failure.

This report records the owner's current UI observation and remembered earlier functionality. The exact date when the Copy actions changed, the prior build where both appeared on cloud tasks, and whether the documented keyboard shortcuts succeed for those tasks remain unverified. No screenshot showing the current Copy menu, logs, or private task identifiers are attached.

What is the expected behavior?

  • Provide a clearly discoverable, working Copy deeplink (or equivalent Copy chat deep link) for every eligible existing Codex Cloud task, alongside a supported way to copy its stable technical task/session identifier.
  • If a cloud task has a meaningful remote working directory, provide an appropriately labeled copy action. If it has no local directory or the action is deliberately unsupported, explain the distinction in UI rather than silently removing the route or presenting a misleading local path.
  • Keep thread copy actions discoverable independently of whether a task was originally created by a dot or appears in Recents.

Additional information

  • Current official OpenAI ChatGPT Learn Commands documents macOS Copy chat deep link (⌘⌥L), Copy working directory (Codex only) (⌘⇧C), and Copy conversation path (Codex only) (⌘⌥⇧C). The documentation does not establish that each action applies to every cloud-hosted task.
  • Previous Codex desktop issues #28233 and #25201 record the older main-chat Copy submenu containing Copy working directory, Copy session ID, and Copy deeplink. Their existence proves earlier menu entries in those reported contexts, not cloud-task support in this user's earlier build.
  • Related but distinct: #53666 (dot-started task sidebar discoverability); #51675 (durable cloud task sidebar hydration). No shared root cause is asserted.

Please identify whether this is an intentional cloud-specific capability change, an unintended context-menu regression, or a command-routing defect; restore access to task links/IDs if appropriate and document any deliberate remote-directory limitation.

Submitted at the account owner's request. No private cloud task IDs, project IDs, chat contents, filesystem paths, logs, credentials, or screenshots are published.
