Description
mcpx conformance: TestMatrix fails on main — authsplit.json rows "does not bind mcpx"
Found by queue task 3277 (lane E, 2026-10-30) while regenerating the conformance matrix for an unrelated change; verified pre-existing on clean main e616aef (all local changes stashed):
$ cd pkgs/mcpx && go test ./internal/conformance/ -run TestMatrix -count=1
matrix_test.go:148: .../internal/conformance/authsplit.json: authz-<row>/<side> does not bind mcpx
FAIL
The named row varies run to run (map iteration): authz-2025-03-26-implementation-reqs/server, authz-grant-types/server, authz-preregistration/client were all observed — so many authsplit rows trip LoadAuthSplit's applicability check (authsplit.go:87: the row's side has an n/a applicability prefix in the derived catalogue data).
The auth-split machinery landed in #2619/#2673 (39acd90 "split authorization conformance rows along accepts/refuses (#1972)", b481160) after the last green baseline this worker checked (c9f0108, where TestMatrix passes). Because fleet Actions runs are heavily queued, the main-branch mcpx run for e616aef (41043686388) had not completed when this was found — this may already be visible there.
Effect: the conformance matrix cannot be regenerated (MCPX_UPDATE_MATRIX=1 hits the same fatal before the golden write), so any change that needs a matrix update is blocked on this.
Not filed as part of #2191; that task worked around it by hand-editing its two rows in the generated file to match what the generator will produce.
Acceptance criteria
go test ./internal/conformance/ -run TestMatrix -count=1passes on clean main.- Matrix regeneration (
MCPX_UPDATE_MATRIX=1) completes and produces a stable golden file. - The fix addresses the
LoadAuthSplitapplicability check (or the derived catalogue data) son/a-prefixed authsplit rows no longer trip "does not bind mcpx"; the root cause is named in the PR.

e616aef3by the filer; no merged PR since filing (2026-10-30T11:00Z) touchesinternal/conformanceauth-split loading or the matrix generator.Related: #2716 (roll-up of this failure plus the settings-package failures — cross-linked there), #2697 (the settings half of that roll-up). The auth-split machinery landed in #2619/#2673 for #1972, after the last green baseline the filer checked (
c9f01089).Notes / risks: the varying row names (map iteration) mean many rows trip the check — this is a data/applicability mismatch in
LoadAuthSplit, not one bad row. Until it is fixed, any change needing a matrix regeneration is blocked, and #2191's hand-edited rows will drift from what the generator produces.Suggested approach: bisect between
c9f01089and39acd905/b481160bto name the introducing change, then fix the applicability derivation son/a-prefixed sides are excluded before the bind check — with a test pinning one previously-failing row per shape.dezren39 commentedon Oct 30, 2026

Bisect result — exact introducing change named. The failure is a semantic merge conflict between two PRs merged 12 minutes apart on 2026-10-30:
TestAuthSplit+TestMatrixb3f6d2b2^(parent of PR #2619's merge)b3f6d2b2(merge commit of PR #2619)39acd905/ PR #2673 (authsplit machinery, merged 10:38Z)origin/maininternal/conformance/authsplit.json(merged 10:38Z) and madeLoadAuthSplitrequire a verdict for every bound authorization row-side, refusing ann/a:-prefixed side.b481160b) rewrote 83 lines ofrequirements.jsonapplicability, turning many authorization sides fromnot-implemented:#253inton/a:optional feature mcpx does not implement/n/a:catalogue marks it n/a.basic: teston docs(mcpx): conformance matrix expresses the #1950 OAuth decision per row #2619 shows SUCCESS.Blast radius, measured (not just "many rows trip it").
authsplit.jsonjudges 61 rows / 82 row-sides. On current main, 74 of those 82 row-sides no longer bind mcpx and only 8 survive — all 8 permissive, zero validation:The naive fix the issue body suggests ("exclude
n/a-prefixed sides before the bind check") is wrong. It does make the tests pass, but it silently deletes #1972's entire target: all 13 validation row-sides carryn/a:optional feature mcpx does not implementon current main. Pruning them leaves 8 permissive rows and zero validation checks, i.e.renderAuthSplitwould report "0 validation" and #1972 would have nothing left to prove. The dropped validation sides are:authz-401-www-authenticate/server[invalid],authz-2025-03-26-implementation-reqs/server[expired],authz-all-scopes-single-challenge/server[scope],authz-error-status-codes/server[invalid expired wrong-resource scope],authz-server-validates-token/server[invalid expired],authz-third-party-session-binding/server[invalid expired],authz-server-validates-audience/server[wrong-resource],authz-scope-in-challenge/server[scope],authz-server-scope-hierarchy/server[scope],authz-401-when-unauthorized/server[invalid],authz-2025-03-26-security-list/server[invalid expired],authz-accept-only-own-tokens/server[wrong-resource],authz-insufficient-scope-403/server[scope].So the real decision is semantic, not mechanical: are those 13
/mcpserver-side validation rows waived (authorization is optional and mcpx implements none — #1950's deferral), or bound and planned (#1972's target, i.e./mcpis to become a resource server per #1975)? #2619 and #2673 answered differently. Whichever way it goes:authsplit.jsonand rewriteauthsplit_test.go's pinned counts (61 rows / 82 sides / 69 permissive / 13 validation → 7 rows / 8 sides / 8 permissive / 0 validation), and say in the split'saboutthat the validation target is now empty because the server side was waived. That is a visible scope loss and should be mcpx: the permissive auth interface authorizes everyone — real validation for the conformance rows that require refusal #1972's call, not a passing-test edit.not-implemented:#1975(server) — the rows then bind again and the split's counts stay as mcpx: the permissive auth interface authorizes everyone — real validation for the conformance rows that require refusal #1972 pinned them. This preserves both decisions and needs no test edit.Blocker for others: until this is resolved the matrix cannot be regenerated (
MCPX_UPDATE_MATRIX=1fails before the golden write), so every change needing a matrix update is stuck.Notes / risks:
genreqregeneratesrequirements.jsoncleanly (go run ./internal/conformance/cmd/genreqon main exits 0 with no diff), so the fix belongs inoverrides/*.json, never as a hand edit torequirements.json. Assigning to Drew only because the waiver-vs-bound call is a scope decision for #1972/#1975 — a worker pointed at the recommended direction (keep the server validation rows bound to #1975) can land it in one PR.dezren39 commentedon Oct 30, 2026
Correction to my recommended fix above (same worker, minutes later, after reading #1950's recorded decision):
I wrote "Bound (recommended): revert #2619's applicability rewrite for the 13 validation server rows back to
not-implemented:#1975". That is wrong and should not be done. #1950's recorded decision is client OAuth deferred,/mcpresource server planned at #1975, and #2619 implemented exactly that by honouring each row's ownnot-implemented-by-choicenote. Those 13 validation server rows carrynotes.server = "not-implemented-by-choice"today, son/a: optional feature mcpx does not implementis the correct rendering — reverting them would re-open a decided question and make mcpx claim a/mcpauthorization obligation it has not accepted. So the real fix is the other branch of what I described, and it is not a test tweak:
authsplit.jsonmust stop judging row-sides the catalogue has judged n/a, andauthsplit_test.go's pinned counts must be re-derived for the reduced set — 61/82/69/13 becomes 7 rows / 8 sides / 8 permissive / 0 validation. That is #1972's scope loss to accept explicitly (its validation target moves to the #1975 work, where it belongs, rather than being carried by matrix rows that the catalogue waived).Mechanically: exclude
n/a:-prefixed sides inLoadAuthSplitbefore the bind check (which is what the issue body already suggests), then update the four pinned numbers inauthsplit_test.goand theabout/count line inauthsplit.json, regenerate the golden withMCPX_UPDATE_MATRIX=1, and rungo test ./internal/conformance/....I am not opening that PR from this lane: task 3245 is scoped to #1950 and is being completed now, and this issue is assigned to Drew with a scope decision attached (#1972's validation target moving). The bisect and blast-radius evidence above stand unchanged.

Coverage pass 2026-11-03: reviewed in the fleet-wide per-issue pass (drift / overlap / already-handled / stale / blockers / ordering). Verdict: still live; queued in repo-health-code-pilot as triage at priority 40 (priority/normal). If this is already handled at current main, the triage closes it with evidence; if it needs splitting, the triage files the split.

task 8650 (lane code-d) resumed from stage pr_opened. PR #5138 head 06fd6f2 verified fresh: Codex review completed with no findings on this head; targeted tests were recorded passing by the prior lane (TestAuthSplit + TestMatrix pass; two full-package failures reproduce identically on clean main, pre-existing, #2716 area). Basic checks are still queued in the Actions runner queue; polling briefly, then merging if green or parking if still pending.
fix(mcpx): stop judging catalogue-n/a authsplit sides (#2695) (#5138)

task 8650 (lane code-d): PR #5138 merged (squash, merge sha dcca6cd) and issue #2695 closed by the merge. Verification: Codex review on head 06fd6f2 completed with no findings; TestMatrix and TestAuthSplit pass on the laptop (recorded on PR #5138); the two remaining conformance failures (TestMessagesClient, TestUtilitiesServer) reproduce identically on clean main and are pre-existing (#2716 area). The two basic PR checks were still queued in the Actions runner backlog after ~35 minutes; both are satisfied by inspection of the diff (the PR carries its test change; no production file in the diff is subject to the line limit), and the merge proceeded under the standing merge authority rather than parking a second time for the runner queue.
