Description
What and why
Presentation capability tiers with in-band terminal detection: ghostty/kitty/wezterm as tier 1 (kitty keyboard protocol, kitty graphics or sixel, synchronized output DEC 2026, high fps), xterm-class as tier 2 (escape-timeout keys, cell grid, batching + diff rendering), line mode as tier 3. Detection is in-band (XTGETTCAP, CSI ? u, DECRQM) so it works identically over SSH and iroh.
Source
- Phase 13 plan — F13.4
- id: write the Phase 13 plan: client shells and client capability providers #564 (Phase 13 plan task)
- id(ssh): input and presentation designs #535 (input and presentation designs) — D1-052
Current status
Not started. grep -rn -i 'kitty\|XTGETTCAP\|DECRQM\|sixel' pkgs/id/src pkgs/id/examples finds nothing; key parsing is legacy-byte heuristics (pkgs/id/examples/roc-world/Key.roc).
Acceptance criteria
- The three tiers are detected and rendered correctly in one test harness
- Every tier benefits from the F11.9-baselined batching/diff rendering
- Detection works identically over SSH and iroh
Size
XL
Prerequisites
- id: server-side redraw batching (few-ms frame coalescing) for all presentations #561 — D1-043 server-side redraw batching
- id(ssh): incremental (diff) ANSI renderer instead of full clear-repaint #562 — D1-044 incremental (diff) ANSI renderer
- id(ssh): use the alternate screen for raw interactive SSH sessions #545 — D1-042 alternate screen for raw interactive SSH
- id: write the Phase 13 plan: client shells and client capability providers #564 (Phase 13 plan task) — F13.1 shell contract (capability negotiation)

Intake review
Fleet monitor intake pass (protocol §5).
Related: Phase 13 sibling set — #785 (F13.3), #786 (F13.4), #787 (F13.5), #788 (F13.6), #789 (F13.7), #790 (F13.8); this issue is F13.4 presentation capability tiers with in-band terminal detection. It is a forward roadmap/spec item, not a reported fixed bug; nothing in the issue or its comments indicates it has been implemented.
Notes / risks: acceptance criteria were already present in the body; none appended. Phase-13 items are large, interdependent platform work (effort/l, priority/low as roadmap items): the set should be sequenced deliberately rather than picked up piecemeal by a worker, and earlier-phase dependencies should be confirmed before implementation starts.
Suggested approach: keep in the Phase 13 backlog until its phase dependencies land; when scheduled, split into a design pass plus implementation slices rather than a single change.

Tie-in from the 2026-11-04 worlds mega-brief: user-supplied presentation assets are filed as #5970 (shaders, sprites by ID, cape+sparkle filters, per-world gating incl. the invisibility case, authored fallbacks, ASCII/glyph degradation) under tracking issue #5955, with media-conversion research at #5971 (kitty graphics + video-to-ASCII — distinct from the kitty keyboard work in #787). #5970 is designed to sit on top of this issue's tiers: the tiers say what a client can render; #5970 says what user assets/filters may ask of those tiers and how fallbacks are declared.
