epic(cluster): ESP32 wing #1093

Open

Description

@dezren39

Esp32 wing

Purpose

The low-end wing: ESP32 sensors and LoRa feeding the ID project and basement telemetry.

Scope

Deliberately a side project of a side project (Drew, 2026-10-20) - keep it noted and lightly planned, not resourced ahead of the core build. Sensor coverage for the basement (power, temperature) is the first genuinely useful slice and ties into epic 9. Device records live in developing-today/hardware-doc.

Execution mode

Hybrid: firmware and pipelines online; device placement and wiring physical.

Dependencies

Independent; telemetry slice supports epic 9.

Acceptance

Wing scoped in the hardware-doc records; first sensor slice (if pursued) reporting into the cluster's telemetry.

Structure

Part of the basement cluster program. Project home: planning/roadmaps/basement-cluster.md in this repo. Full program register: goal workspace files/idea-register-2026-10-20.md (Muse goal goal_ba17a5777c21). Detailed task issues are filed as sub-issues of this epic; dependencies use blocks / blocked-by links.

Hard rules for the whole program: no HashiCorp anything; everything bootstrappable from config, no hand-built state.

    agent-note:v1
    state: triaged (coverage pass)
Coverage pass 2026-11-03: reviewed in the fleet-wide per-issue pass (drift / overlap / already-handled / stale / blockers / ordering). Verdict: still live; queued in repo-health-code-pilot as triage at priority 30 (priority/none). If this is already handled at current main, the triage closes it with evidence; if it needs splitting, the triage files the split.

    • Task: Triage of epic issue epic(cluster): ESP32 wing #1093 (ESP32 wing) — execution lane assigned opencode; handing off to the laptop claimant, which launches the bound opencode session. • Expectation: the claimant's session triages issue epic(cluster): ESP32 wing #1093 at current main and drives task 7650 to its terminal state.

    Triage: #1093 — epic(cluster): ESP32 wing

Verdict: still live, deliberately deferred. No code change in this repo is warranted now; the epic stays open in the roadmap's Ideas section. Triage outcome: triaged.

    State at current main

Checked against origin/main 0467ae0f (2026-11-03) and fresh GitHub state.

    • Roadmap — planning/roadmaps/basement-cluster.md lists the wing under Ideas (status idea): "A low-end section of ESP32 sensors and LoRa alongside the compute fleet. A side project of a side project for now." That matches the epic body (Drew, 2026-10-20: note it and plan it lightly, do not resource it ahead of the core build).
    • This repo — no ESP32 / sensor / basement-telemetry implementation: sensor and telemetry searches hit only unrelated NixOS hardware-config and package files.
    • Sub-issues / PRs — epic(cluster): ESP32 wing #1093 has no sub-issues, and no open or merged PR implements it. The only PR that touched the epic was docs(basement-cluster): link filed epic issues in roadmap #1109 (merged docs change linking the filed epics in the roadmap); nothing else references it.
    • hardware-doc (the device-record home named in the body) — deep ESP32/LoRa research already exists: device dossiers under devices/espressif/, devices/waveshare/, devices/seeed-studio/xiao-esp32s3-sense, devices/m5stack/papermono and cap-lora-1262; component records under components/espressif/, components/semtech/sx1262, and sensors (aht20, shtc3, bmi270); plus cross-cutting guides guides/lora and guides/espressif. What is missing is the wing-level scoping record — nothing ties a first sensor slice to the basement program, and machines/ currently holds only the inventory-record machinery.
    • Program context — umbrella epic EPIC: Basement Talos/Cozystack cluster program #1817; the wing is epic 12 of 12; its telemetry slice supports epic(cluster): observability, backup & recovery #1090 (observability), which is currently parked and itself blocked by epic(cluster): Cozystack platform #1087 / epic(cluster): platform services #1088.

    Fix path (scoped, not started)

    1. hardware-doc scoping record — one wing record naming the first sensor slice: basement power + temperature, the candidate boards drawn from the existing dossiers (XIAO ESP32S3 Sense, PaperMono, DinMeter, SX1262 LoRa), and the evidence status of every claim. This is the concrete deliverable behind "wing scoped in the hardware-doc records", and it is independent of the core build.
    2. First sensor-slice issue — a child issue for the temperature/power node reporting into cluster telemetry, blocked by epic(cluster): observability, backup & recovery #1090 so the data has a consumer when it lands.
    3. This repo — no code work beyond docs until the slice exists; the roadmap row stays in Ideas.

    Blockers and ordering

Recommendation: leave #1093 open, label state status/waiting-dependency + priority/low, and pick it up when the core build reaches the telemetry stage or when the hardware-doc scoping pass is scheduled. This closes queue task 7650.

Re-verified on 2026-11-03T16:13Z, same main: #1090 still OPEN+parked, #1093 still has zero sub-issues, roadmap row still idea. Published from the OpenChamber scheduled lane after the earlier rate-limit park.
