    Overview

We need to create a guide for Brand Book so that teams can have consistent messaging for their project

    Action Items

    • Gather examples of how other Hack for LA projects or volunteers have done this (if applicable), adding each example as a link in the resources section below
      • If the guidance you received from the teams that have done this practice was not sufficient, remove the "Guide: Gather Examples" label and add the "Guide: Research" label
    • Research existing information about [name of item] in [relevant resources, articles, etc.]
      • Once done, evaluate if the guide requires a template. If it does then
      • if yes, remove the "Guide: Research" label and add the "Guide: Draft Template" label
        • Create a draft template
          • Once done, remove the "Guide: Draft Template" label and add the "Guide: Draft Guide" label
      • if no, remove the "Guide: Research" label and add the "Guide: Draft Guide" label
Create a draft guide, either in markdown format in this issue or a google doc in the ux/ui google drive
      • Once done, remove the "Guide: Draft Guide" label and add the "Guide: Needs Peer Review" label
    • Review the guide with UX/UI community of practice
      • Once done, remove the "Guide: Needs Peer Review" label and add the "Guide: Leadership Review" label
    • Present to the Hack for LA leadership team for sign off
      • Once approved, remove the "Guide: Leadership Review" label and add the "Guide: ready publication" label

    Notes from 10-24-25 Guides Meeting:
Use Claude for guidance on mission statements -
Break it down into questions and steps on instructions sections
Make Instructions larger and more detailed
Add Tagline and mission statements from more two-sided marketplaces
Make examples more uniform and lined up
Brand Attributes : Link to specific project
Make all sticky notes uniform size

Bonnie: Has more notes for brand attributes, will address next week

    Notes from 11/13/24

    • It would be best if Hack for LA examples could be tracked through every step - mission statement, to tagline, to brand personality and so on - but many projects have not completed all the branding steps. Find one that did to use in every example to get a good view of the entire process

    • Rewrite instructions for tagline with improved prompts. Describe instructions for each section fully. Clearly label and number each prompt.

    • Should we continue the trend into brand personality and link each icon to a specific Hack for LA project? Example -

Project Personality Type Character Match Why
Open Community Survey Inclusive facilitator Mr. Rogers or Leslie Knope Makes everyone feel heard, safe space for honest input
Internship Encouraging mentor Uncle Iroh or Michelle Obama Builds confidence, believes in potential, real experience
GreenEarth OS Resourceful guide Samwise or Jane Goodall Navigates complexity, connects resources, removes barriers

Overview of the Brand Exercise Workflow

    Purpose of This System

This branding method uses a series of structured workshops to create core brand elements such as the mission statement, tagline, identity, attributes, and values. The goal is to gather a wide range of individual perspectives and synthesize them into clear, team-aligned outputs.

    Individual Assignments via Issue Templates

Each exercise is powered by a GitHub issue template. For every template, we generate identical issues—one per team member. Instead of a single shared thread, each participant receives their own assignment. This prevents dominant voices from shaping the conversation early and ensures every person contributes original ideas before group discussion.

FigJam as the Workspace for Input

Each issue includes instructions that correspond to a prepared FigJam board. Participants complete their assignment (e.g., drafting a mission statement or selecting an identity avatar) and place their work in the designated FigJam area. This keeps all inputs visible, structured, and easy to compare during the workshop.

    Team Review and Discussion

After all contributions are submitted, the team meets to review them together. Participants walk through their work, clarify the intent behind specific choices, and ask questions of one another. This step deepens shared understanding and surfaces themes across the submissions.

    Clustering and Voting

Once the team identifies the meaningful parts of each contribution, we extract those pieces and group them by similarity or intent. Everyone then votes within each cluster—one plus-one stamp per person—to highlight preferred wording or ideas. This structured vote narrows the field while still preserving the breadth of input.

    Drafting and Refinement

The highest-voted pieces are merged into a single draft. Because this compilation doesn’t yet read smoothly, the team refines the language together until it forms a cohesive and polished statement. Every workshop in the branding sequence uses this same cycle: individual creation, collective review, structured selection, and collaborative refinement.

    Notes from 2/5/25

    • Added more mission statements from two-sided marketplaces that met criteria mentioned in that section's instructions.
    • Added notes from Claude for instructional black boxes over mission statement and taglines; left the rest of the suggestions in this issue's Google Drive folder.
    • Should Bonnie's notes be in a separate readme file or go straight into the FigJam? Feel more like vital info to have before starting.
    • When using AI instructions, see what goes into the overview; preface instructions with "this excercise does xyz"
    • In general, make sure black box instructions only include instructions for that specific section

Place CTA to be near bottom. Main instructions seem to have slightly different placement
Need to have instructions in each section that is broken up by facilitator and team member
example: Facilitator: Once attributes are added, group similar words on sticky notes together.
example: Team Members: Each team member will add a sticky note for each grouped attribute with a short explanation of what it means for this specific project.
